{International: Euphrates News} Exxon Mobil Corporation decided to start the evacuation of engineers working in the West Qurna oil field in the province of Basra.
"The decision was caused by the increasing security threats that may be exposed to employees," private sources at the Basra Oil Company said in a press statement on Wednesday.
The sources said that "the first batch of staff will leave Basra on Wednesday evening to the UAE."
The US embassy in Baghdad said earlier on Wednesday that the Foreign Ministry ordered the withdrawal of non-essential staff from both the embassy and the consulate in Erbil.
"Their normal visa services will be temporarily suspended," she said, and recommended that those who are included in the decision leave as soon as possible. It was unclear how many staff would be evacuated.
On Tuesday, the US military reiterated its concerns about possible imminent threats from Iran to its troops in Iraq.
