The Iraqi government held an emergency meeting Saturday after protests against high unemployment and a lack of basic services spread to the nation’s capital.
The National Security Council was urgently convened under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and decided to cut internet access in the city.
It is concerned that the demonstrations are spreading to other parts of Baghdad.
The protests, which began in southern Basra province, spread to the city late Friday.
Demonstrators took to the streets of Baghdad demanding the resignation of government officials and some protesters burnt tires to block roads.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of protesters cut the road to Umm Qasr port in Basra. In Maysan province, security forces fired on protestors, leaving one dead and 15 injured.
Tensions have been rising in Basra since Sunday, when a demonstrator was killed by security forces while taking part in protests against high unemployment and chronic power outages.
On Friday morning, Abadi paid a visit to Basra, where he promised to address protesters’ grievances.
Roughly 80 percent of Iraq’s overall crude oil exports originate from oilfields in Basra province.
For years, Basra residents have complained that foreign nationals, rather than locals, were being employed by the domestic energy sector.
They also complain of frequent power outages amid summer temperatures that often reach as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

PressTV-Iraqi PM Abadi visits Basra after deadly protests
Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has visited the southern oil city of Basra after deadly protests there against dire economic conditions.
Earlier on Friday, security forces killed another demonstrator in the city of Basrah as Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi was on an official visit there. Basrah residents, decrying poor government services and corruption, warned of more rallies if their demands were not met.
They held protest rallies in the oil-rich port city for a fifth straight day and blocked access to the nearby commodities port of Umm Qasr.
Basrah is an important hub for oil exports which account for over 95 percent of Iraq's government revenues.
Iraqis shout slogans and raise national flags during a protest against poor services, unemployment and corruption as they gather in the capital Baghdad's Tahrir Square on July 13, 2018.
A similar rally was also staged in the holy city of Najaf on Friday as public anger mounted over unemployment and delivery of basic services. Local sources said hundreds of demonstrators entered the main hall of the city’s airport and walked on to the tarmac, temporarily disrupting the air traffic.
A few hours later, air traffic resumed at the airport after protesters withdrew, state television reported.
Iraqi protesters shout slogans as they demonstrate inside the terminal in Najaf International Airport in the central holy city on July 13, 2018.
Another protest rally was also held in capital Baghdad on Friday against poor services, unemployment and corruption.
Meanwhile, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, Iraq’s top Shia cleric, issued a statement, expressing his solidarity with the protesters. He added that he was concerned about people’s difficult living conditions.
The protests over basic services come at a sensitive time when Iraqi political factions are trying to form a coalition government after the May 12 parliamentary elections.

The directive came in an effort to stem the burgeoning protests, which on Friday spread from oil-city Basra - where residents had blocked access to the nearby commodities port of Umm Qasr - to the cities of Amara, Nasiriya and the Shi’ite holy city of Najaf.
Hundreds of Iraqis stormed the airport and halted air traffic in Najaf on Friday.
Iraq’s top Shi’ite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, had expressed solidarity with protesters, saying they faced an “extreme lack of public services” such as electricity in the suffocating summer heat.
Sistani, who has millions of followers, rarely intervenes in politics, but has wide sway over public opinion.
PROTESTS CONTINUE
On Saturday, tens of protesters were demonstrating at the Safwan border crossing with Kuwait as well as at the entrance to the Majnoon oil field, one of the largest in the country which lies 40 km north of Basra, local security sources said. However, they had not entered the facility.
Protesters have been gathering at several major oilfields in Basra in recent days.
Oil exports from Basra account for more than 95 percent of OPEC producer Iraq’s state revenues.
Any potential disruptions to production could severely impact the country’s limping economy. Basra oil officials have said the protests have not impacted crude production.
Iraqi politicians face growing unrest as they try to form a coalition government after a May 12 parliamentary election tainted by allegations of fraud.
Abadi is heading a fragile caretaker government, in place until the new government is formed.
A political bloc led by cleric Moqtada al-Sadr won a majority in the poll on an anti-corruption platform which had appeal across Iraq’s electorate.

Iraq: Sistani Backs Basra Protests as Abadi Calls for Calm

Baghdad - Hamza Mustafa
Iraq's top Shiite authority voiced on Friday support for popular protests that have been raging in the southern Basra region for a week.
Representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Abdel Mahdi al-Karbalai said: "It is not fair and it is never acceptable that this generous province is one of the most miserable areas in Iraq.”
He urged the "federal and local government to deal seriously with the demands of citizens", while also calling on demonstrators to refrain from violence.
“Had officials properly invested finances and expertise away from petty calculations and stood against corruption, we would not be witnessing such tragic circumstances today,” he added.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi’s office, meanwhile, said that he had held a series of meetings with the local government in Basra and with security leaderships there as soon as he returned to the country.
He flew straight into the southern city from Brussels where he attended a NATO summit to discuss the ISIS terrorist group, and immediately held talks with officials.
Hundreds of people holding Iraqi flags gathered outside the regional headquarters in Basra city center Friday, with security forces including riot police deployed heavily.
The demonstrators have been protesting over unemployment, rising living costs and a lack of basic services in the city.
Abadi in Basra ordered local officials to sort out "the legal status" of security guards employed by the interior ministry at oil facilities, his office said.
These guards receive no benefits and work without contracts unlike their peers at the interior ministry.
At a later meeting with local tribal leaders Abadi pledged to "spend the necessary funds for Basra, including on services and reconstruction", a source close to the prime minister told AFP.
"People are hungry, there is no water, no electricity," protester Abdullah Khaled, 29, told AFP.
Protests spread northwards as well to other regions Friday as demonstrators took to the streets in the Dhi Qar, Maysan and Najaf provinces.
An AFP journalist reported several protesters were injured as dozens forced their way into the waiting room at the airport serving the holy city of Najaf despite a heavy police presence.
Several civilians and policemen were also injured in clashes around the governor's home in the city of Nasiriyah, a medical source said.
Media aide at the oil ministry Assem Jihad, meanwhile, told Asharq Al-Awsat: “Oil exports from the south have not been affected by the protests.”
He revealed that a crisis cell of concerned ministers and officials, headed by Oil Minister Jabbar al-Luaibi has agreed on a series of procedures in order to find a solution the situation.
An informed source later told Asharq Al-Awsat that Iraq has been affected by the US sanctions imposed against Iran.
He explained that the sanctions have prevented the country from paying back debts piled up from energy loans and worth some $100 million.
In addition, he warned that operation in the gas pipeline from Iran to Iraq may come to a halt soon if Baghdad does not pay its dues to Tehran.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Muqtada al-Sadr wants the government to privatize the electricity sector amid deadly protests over electricity shortages.
The government should use “foreign, non-occupying” companies to improve electricity services, even if it goes against electoral gains, the influential cleric said in a statement on Thursday.
Sadr, who emerged as the winner in Iraq’s May parliamentary election, running on an anti-corruption platform, urged the government to “move forward with privatizing electricity, with the condition of handing it over to private Iraqi or foreign companies and the removal of bill collection from the corridors of the corrupt government.”
He called on the people to conserve electricity and pay their bills promptly. He also asked for poor villages and rural communities to be provided with generators.
Protests in the sweltering southern province of Basra have raged for more than a week. On Thursday, protesters threatened to seize control of the border crossing with Iran, demanding better access to water, electricity, and jobs.
One protester in Basra was killed on Sunday when security forces opened fire.
Sadr urged the demonstrators to remain peaceful. He announced he will send a delegation to visit the protesters and added he is open to leading a “demonstration of a million,” similar to the weekly anti-government protests he led in Baghdad.
Iraq and the Kurdistan Region suffer from chronic electricity shortages.

Iraq puts security forces on high alert on sixth day of protests in southern cities

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq placed its security forces on high alert on Saturday, in response to ongoing protests in the country’s southern provinces over poor government services and corruption.

The nationwide order was issued overnight by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who also serves as the country’s commander in chief of the armed forces, in a directive seen by Reuters.
Reinforcement troops from both the Counter Terrorism Service and the Army’s Ninth Division have already been dispatched to Basra, where demonstrators gathered for the sixth consecutive day, to help protect the province’s oil fields, security sources said.
