(Baghdad: Al Furat News) The acting governor of Kirkuk, Rakan Jubouri, announced on Monday the inauguration of Kirkuk International Airport in August next, indicating that a French company will take over the operation of the airport.
Jubouri said in a statement to a number of media that "a technical delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Transport, will arrive tomorrow to Kirkuk to conduct a detection and set the date for the landing of the first civil aircraft on the runway of Kirkuk International Airport."
Jubouri added that "the province got all the official approvals required to inaugurate the airport, was agreed with the Minister of Transport, to be operating within two weeks after the visit of the technical delegation, the ministry and the landing of the first aircraft on the runway.
"The airport will provide services to 1.5 million people from the province, as well as 3 million citizens from the provinces adjacent to Kirkuk, namely Diyala, Salahuddin, south of Mosul "He said.
Iraq has four civilian airports, the largest of which Baghdad International Airport, followed by Basra airport, Najaf, Mosul, while the Kurdistan region, two airports are Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, and the latter are under the authority of Baghdad.
