A member of the Committee of Experts in amending the constitution, Adel al-Lami, revealed on Wednesday a proposal to adopt the last 1997 census to determine the number of deputies, indicating that the proposal contributes to reducing the number of deputies to 272 deputies.
Al-Lami said in a statement to "Information" that "the committee discussed several options in order to implement the current election law and reduce the number of representatives in early elections."
He added that "the constitutional article expressly provides for limiting the number of deputies to the last official census in Iraq, that is, in 1997, which reached the population of Iraq by about 27 million citizens."
Al-Lami explained that "reducing the number of deputies from the current 317 to 272 does not need to amend a constitution, but rather to implement the constitutional article on determining the population," noting that "some political forces are trying to return to the current number in Parliament to increase the number of their representatives in the House of Representatives." 25
